Week 29 - Broken Dishes

Good morning and welcome back to our Sew A Long for 2020.

This week we are making the Broken Dishes block. A very traditional block but this one is made slightly differently. I love it when I see another way of making something - even better is that it works so well too!

I saw this block on the Moda Blockheads 3 site and it was from Laurie Simpson - Minick and Simpson. Firstly, I love everything that Minick and Simpson design so of course I was checking out their block. Then I had a look at the pattern and thought this is a great way to make this block. All the instructions are in the PDF pattern of course.

Hmmm, the stripes in my 6” block look a little wayward. Optical illusion?

With this method there is quite a big piece that is cut away. Of course I couldn’t throw that size piece out so here is what I made with the 6” and 12” cutaway pieces.

6” block pieces

6” block pieces

For the 6” block pieces, I trimmed each section back to 2 3/4” squares and pieced them together as shown. How cute is that little pinwheel in the middle. Your will have a 4 3/4” square block.

12” block pieces

12” block pieces

For the 12” block pieces, I trimmed them back to 5 3/4” squares and pieced them together as shown. I have orientated them differently to the 6” block. Same pieces but two different blocks. Your will have a 10 3/4” square block.

I haven’t decided what I will turn these bonus blocks into yet but will post photos when I do.

I would love to see what you come up with too.

This is the block by Laurie Simpson. Can you tell by the colours why I love everything they make haha.

Okey dokey, that’s me for this week. Have a fantastic week and I’ll see you back here next Wednesday.

Take care, Christine
